Moving News

It is with a great deal of both joy and sadness that I must inform you that David and I will be leaving Atlanta in February.  We will be returning to my home state of Mississippi and very close to his home state of Louisiana.  I have agreed to stay at St. Dunstan's through the Epiphany season.  As the time draws closer for us to leave, we will begin saying our goodbyes.  For now, I will continue to work as hard as ever to make the music here as good as possible.  And yes, this was a difficult decision only because we love St. Dunstan's so much.  ~Jane Butler

Jane and David Butler's move to Mississippi is good news for them, but sad news for all of us at St. Dunstan's.  They have been an integral part of this staff and congregation for a decade, and they will be greatly missed.  I have enjoyed working with Jane during the short time I have been here, and look forward to planning worship with her for the upcoming seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany.  We will have opportunities to tell Jane and David both how much we have appreciated them and to send them off with a proper farewell.  And I will soon be appointing a committee to help in the search for a new organist/choir director.  Jane will be leaving some difficult shoes to fill.

Within Our Walls

World War II Memories of Parishioners:  The Episcopal Church Women are pleased to present a book entitled "World War II Memories of Parishioners," compiled July 2004.  Twenty-two members shared their memories, and those who served provided photos also.  Patrons have made this book possible.  Each family unit may receive a copy.  If you have not received your family copy please notify Jane Lamkin, and she will get one to you.  Thank each of you who participated in this project of history.

St. Dunstan's Roses are Planted:  In 2001 Bill Lamkin learned there was a rose with the name St. Dunstan.  He researched this rose and found it could be obtained from England and began to make plans to procure these roses.  Then he found one source in the United States, Freedom Gardens in Ohio.  Roses were ordered by Bill and Jane Lamkin and Fred and Helen Branch in 2001.  The roses were sent but never received.  On the 24th of October a second group of four roses were planted in memory of Fred Branch and Bill Lamkin by Helen Branch and Jane Lamkin.  Lamar Booth kindly helped prepare the location.  It is our hope the St. Dunstan's rose will flourish at St. Dunstan's Church.  ~Jane Lamkin

Mark your calendars:  St. Dunstan's Art Show will take place January 22 and 23, 2005.

Flower Chairpersons Needed:  We are seeking two people to share the duties of Flower Committee Chair.  If you need more information about these duties, call Beverly Booth.

Deadline for articles for the December Bellows is November 15.  Please email your articles to St. Dunstan's or leave them in Kim Branch's mailbox in the church office.

Speaking Out for Outreach

The first meeting of St. Dunstan's Scholarship Committee, whose purpose is to award some scholarship money to one or more students or would-be students at Emmaus House, met for the first time on Sunday, October 17 at the church.  Present were:  Dr. Christine Bird, Dr. Helen Branch, and Dr. Joseph Monti.  Dr. Tom Barnett was unable to attend.

The committee is inclined to spread the available money over two students rather than one, and to give it to someone who has a clearly defined plan for how to use the money to make a better life, now and in the future.  Applicants will be limited to Emmaus House folk who come recommended by Emmaus House.  Because the money is not enough to send someone away to college, it will probably be used to subsidize local post-secondary education (not necessarily college.)

The next step is for the committee to meet with Mr. George Maxwell, who is currently in charge at Emmaus House.

Psalm One

By the Youth of St. Dunstan's, September 2004

For God alone my soul in silence wails,
from the Lord comes my salvation.
You know my thoughts and love me still.
Our open minds free our
selves to you.
Tell God what's on your mind or you may regret it.
You should talk about your feelings;
It will make you feel better.
Trust yourself and others will also trust you.
To believe in God, you must believe in yourself.
Thank you, God, for the gifts of this life.

You're Invited

For the tenth holiday season, The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany presents an exhibit of over 200 nativity scenes from around the world from Monday, November 29, through Sunday, December 5.  From the elegant to the eccentric, the birth scenes are sculpted in materials ranging from carved wood to volcanic ash.  In the church nave, there will be a special exhibit of nativity scenes that highlight the differences between the birth story as told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.

Each nativity is accompanied by scriptural quotes and hymn texts.  The remaining birth scenes will be exhibited in the Parish Hall, where a catered lunch (weekdays only, by reservation), light refreshments, baked goods, crafts and gifts can be purchased.  Admission:  $4.00 for adults; $3.00 for seniors & students, children under 12 free.  For a brochure or more information call 404.373.8338 or send an e-mail to info@epiphany.org.

A Special Note of Thanks

Dear friends at St. Dunstan's Church,

The Sundial at the church entrance is beautiful beyond description.  The dedication to Fred and me has warmed my heart more that I can ever express.  I am sure that he is looking in on us with great pleasure at the presentation.  Some time ago, after Fred had been a part of the founding of St. Anne's church, and the first Senior Warden there, and after we had helped with the founding of St. Dunstan's, someone asked Fred, " How is it that you have been so active in founding churches?"

He replied, "I've looked around the world and I don't see any other institution dedicated to teaching LOVE, the essential ingredient for survival in this world, so I thought I'd better be about supporting this institution." And he did so until his very last day on this earth.  He believed in love for God, for God's creation, for all people and their talents -- teaching and learning, music, art, science, and industry, big gifts as well as the smallest ones -- even swing dancing!

Thank you for the very fine and appropriate tribute to LOVE -- your love for us and this church.  I cherish all of you and your many contributions to the true meaning of LOVE.  ~Helen Branch

Happy Thanksgiving.

The Church office will be closed on Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26.

Vestry Meeting Minutes
October 12, 2004

Before the Meeting:

Susan Hauser treated the Vestry to a light supper.

Opening the Meeting:

The Rev. Patricia Templeton opened the Vestry Meeting in prayer.

Clerk Appointment:

Bruce Lafitte volunteered to be clerk.

Attendance:

In attendance were: Tricia Templeton, Lee Morris, Bill Boyd, Susan Hauser, Daria Jones, Jim Keaten, Bruce Lafitte, Nancy Knight Latimore, and Wayne Lord. Tonia Hopkins and Geoff Walker were absent and sorely missed.

Minutes of Sept 7 ...

... were read previously by everyone and were approved.

Treasurer's Report:

Lee reported that we are liquid and have almost $400K in assets. The bulk of our assets is in Temporary Restricted funds. The Nominating Committee account has been zeroed out. The Kitchen Renovation fund is building, mostly in pledges. At the 3/4 point of the year, pledge income is at 72.29%, which is good. Plate income is lagging some, but usually is big at the end of the year. Interest is slightly overstated. Utilities and phone expenses are falling in line. Items that are over in percentage are not large in dollars. The budget was unanimously approved.

Rector's Report:

Tricia reported that much has happened in the last month. We began our Liturgical year with Christian Education, held a successful barbecue with lots of visitors, dedicated the sundial to the Branches, enjoyed a well-attended outdoor service, had 11 people and one dog at the 8:30 service last Sunday, and enjoyed a wonderful Celebration of a New Ministry. Tricia expressed her appreciation for everyone's efforts and the feeling was mutual. She noted that there are not any huge events planned for the next month, and we were all relieved. There are 3 babies being baptized on All Saint's Day. There are already some contentious pieces of legislation on the Diocesan website for consideration at Annual Council. A report of the Anglican Commission is due out in a week, so Tricia warned us to be prepared for media attention and comments at work. This committee was formed at the request of the Archbishop of Canterbury to study the impact of recent decisions made by the Episcopal Church in the US regarding issues of sexuality. Tricia noted that there is no international oversight of any branch of the Anglican Church. The ECUS is autonomous.

Fellowship Report:

Nancy Knight provided a written synopsis of the barbecue and other items. The money taken in at the barbecue was the highest in the four years of the event. We now have a permanent banner that can be used every year. We all agreed that the reception after the Celebration of a New Ministry was wonderful. We commended Nancy Knight for all of her efforts this past month.

Three new business items discussed together:

We moved into New Business and held a lengthy discussion of the Christian Formation position, the kitchen plans, and next year's budget. We have an outstanding candidate for the Christian Formation position but need to do our homework on funding this position. At the present time, $54K of the $80K needed for the kitchen has been raised or pledged, so we need to decide how we should proceed. Finally, Lee presented us a pro forma budget for next year to help us see what our financial position might be. Many thoughts and areas of funding were on the table in the discussion that ensued. There was a motion made, seconded, and passed requesting that the Executive Committee explore funding and call a meeting within the next 10 days to decide on filling the Christian Formation position.

Stewardship Report:

Wayne plans to talk to Tricia next and will get the campaign started very soon.

Lighting Project:

Daria has met with Michelle, her lighting expert contact, who proposed some creative ideas. The next step is for the two of them to meet in the church.

Telephone Tree:

Geoff knows of some automated systems and needs to look at them.

Parking:

Susan said that we need signs or stripes to mark parking places at the church. This is to prevent people from parking straight in on both sides in areas where there is not enough room to do that and get out easily. Bill will look at options and report back. Nancy Knight suggested asking Don Ogle about this.

Next Vestry Meeting:

November 9 at 6:30 pm. Geoff Walker is on the schedule for providing a light supper at 6:00 pm.

Closing the Meeting:

Tricia closed the Vestry Meeting in prayer.

Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Lafitte
