ABRAHAM AND ISAAC

my name is not Abraham
i am Julia
15 years
      two months
            & three days
but even if i were 99
and called upon by God
lightening bolts, white robes, and
            hallelujah chorus
to kill the miracle he gave me
            my son
not even then would i do it.
it would be a sacrifice to me
but my son could think
my son could feel
my son could live
to my son
            it would be murder
he is my son, but he is not mine to give away
and even if i burn in a hell
or my family dies out
or i lose my red shoes
at least i have my son's love & trust
my name is not Abraham
i am Julia
15 years
      two months
            & three days
i don't know God
but i know this:
where there is undeniable love
            keep it

--- Julia Friederich
Julia is the granddaughter of Betty Whittier

Last Sunday (June 26) I ended my sermon on the story of Abraham and Isaac with this powerful poem written by Betty Whittier’s granddaughter, Julia Friedrich. Julia, who wrote this poem for an English class at Druid Hills High School, will be beginning studies at the University of Georgia this fall. Thanks to Betty Whittier for sharing this poem with Kim Branch when it was written almost three years ago. And I thank Kim for saving it and giving it to me last week.

Within Our Walls

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? If you are sitting in the nave, the answer to that question should be yes, thanks to our new sound system. Thanks to Geoff Walker, who researched and had the system installed. It will be up and running on July 3rd. Our goal is that the new system will be both helpful and unobtrusive. It may take a few tries to get the sound adjusted correctly. So please be patient and give us your feedback on how it is working for you.

METRO STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN has begun a choir and has need of some musical instruments. They need two flutes and one violin. There are inmates who play these instruments. If you have one to be donated please contact Suzanne Bassett.

Updates
Here are updates on several of our ongoing projects.

THE KITCHEN – We had hoped to be in full building mode by now. But because the footprint of the building will be slightly changed, we must go before the zoning board for approval before construction can begin. We’ll keep you posted on the process.

THE PLAYGROUND – The equipment has been ordered and should be installed later this summer. In the meantime, children are already enjoying the stumps in the Beech Grove.

Thanks

Many thanks to Peachy Horne, who is stepping down as head of the altar guild after nine years of service in that important position. And thanks to Claudia Gimson, who has agreed to step into that role.

Thanks also to Peachy and Matt Taylor for their wonderful ideas on how we could use the wood from the oak tree that recently had to be cut down in front of the church. Check out the row of stumps that the children are climbing on in the beech grove, and the path of wooden discs around the memorial garden.

Christian Formation for Youth and Children

From the Director

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR VBS SAFARI ADVENTURE STAFF!

Jane Lamkin – Art for PreK-1st grade class
Susan Hauser – Bible Storytelling and Music for 2nd-5th grade class
Tina Lowe – Games for all ages
Rhonda Woodruff and Sarah Hancock – Teacher Assistants

Teen helpers included Allie Summerville, Lindsey Reece, Nelson Branch, Myles Moody, Rosie Johnson-Cater, and Christi Work.

Snacks and other materials were provided by several families including Kieran Cannistra, Betty B. Cooper, Ruth Summerville, Cassie Templeton, Ginnie and Paul Ruhmkorff, Tina Lowe, Rhonda Woodard, Margaret Michaelides, and Dick Harris.

Highlights of the week included a wonderful beanie baby animal hunt that Tina Lowe organized on the wilderness trail using Allie Summerville’s collectables! Tina Lowe had the great idea of placing animal nametags on the backs of each camper. First they had to guess the animal name by asking questions of the other campers. Then they had to find the beanie baby animals on the trail. Children of all ages loved this game. The Campers also enjoyed water day and the new climbing stumps created from the approximately 150-year-old tree that was removed from the front yard.

Tina Lowe took on the project of tie-dying t-shirts for all the campers – thank you Tina!

Jane Lamkin organized some fabulous art projects, including hand-made drums, necklaces strung with colorful beads, and imaginatively painted lions and fish. Jane also included cultural storytelling and music-making during the art class.

Susan and Grace Hauser enjoyed teaching our youngest and preparing songs for our closing presentation on Friday July 1st. The Older Group prepared a mini-musical drama called The Peaceable Kingdom, where the animals in the 19th c. American painting by Edward Hicks, based on Isaiah 11, come to life to tell a story about world peace. The children also made colorful masks during the week to help create the live tableaux.

Thanks also to Tricia Templeton and Helen Branch for telling the opening Bible Stories each day, to all the children who acted in the opening puppetry and skits, Delia Gamboa for her help in the nursery, and Rhonda and Jane for overseeing many transitions!

Don’t forget to look in on our garden…

A kiss from the sun for forgiveness
A song from the birds for mirth
We are closer to God in a garden
Than anyplace else on earth.

Farewell and God Speed, Bert

On Sunday, July 10th, we will bid farewell to Bert Landman, our interim organist and choir director. Bert has accepted a full-time position at Trinity Church in Hartford, Connecticut, which begins in early August. I cannot thank Bert enough for the wonderful job he has done for us the last five months, seeing us through Lent, Easter, Pentecost and our 40th anniversary celebration. The people of Trinity Church are fortunate, indeed.

Our search for a permanent organist/choir director continues. We have three strong candidates who are in the process of auditioning. My strong hope is to have someone in that position by the end of the summer. In the meantime, we will have substitute musicians for the remainder of July and at least the first part of August. I thank the search committee for the good work they are doing, and the choir for continuing to enhance our worship with their excellent music.

~Tricia
