Welcome, Steve Furches!
After six months of searching, I am delighted to announce that we have a new organist/choir director. Steve Furches’ first Sunday with us will be August 21.
Steve has more than 20 years experience in church music. He has been the organist at First Congregational Church in Atlanta since 2003. Other experience includes six years as full-time organist/choir director at Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples , Florida . He has worked with both adult and children’s choirs.
Steve has a Master of Music in Pipe Organ Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Music, both with highest honors from the University of Florida .
The search committee unanimously recommended Steve from among the five candidates who auditioned for the position and numerous others who applied. They were impressed by his musical abilities, his knowledge of liturgy, his interaction with the choir and his great enthusiasm for the job.
In addition to his church work, Steve is a fitness counselor. He does both personal training and leads classes at Emory, Piedmont Hospital , Lockheed Martin, and Peachtree Center Athletic Club.
Steve’s partner, Peter Prinsloo, is the head tennis pro at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Please join us in welcoming Steve and Peter to St. Dunstan’s.
For the last two and a half years, St. Dunstan’s has been involved in some kind of search – first for a rector, then for a Christian formation director, and finally, for an organist/choir director.
Of course, the work of the church has continued and prospered during all of that time, but any kind of search for a new staff member takes hours of time and energy from many people. I am looking forward to being able to devote all of our energy and focus to the ministries and programs of St. Dunstan’s. I am excited about the days ahead.

New This Fall
Companions in Christ
This fall we will offer a weekly course of spiritual formation called Companions in Christ. Companions is a 28-week program that “is designed to create a small group setting where you can respond to God’s call to an ever-deepening communion and transformation in Christ. The focus is on your experience of God and your discovery of spiritual practices that help you share more fully in the life of Christ.”
Tricia will lead the classes, which will meet on Tuesday mornings from 10-noon. Preparation for each class requires about 30 minutes a day of reading and reflection. The cost of the course is $30 for the participant’s book and a journal.
The material is divided into five parts:
-
Embracing the Journey: The Way of Christ (five weeks) – a course in Christian spiritual growth as a journey toward holiness and wholeness, individually and in community, by the grace of God.
-
Feeding on the Word: The Mind of Christ (five weeks) – an introduction to several ways of meditating on and praying with scripture.
-
Deepening Our Prayer: The Heart of Christ (six weeks) – a guided experience of various forms and styles of prayer.
-
Responding to Our Call: The Work of Christ (five weeks) – a presentation of vocation or call: giving ourselves to God and receiving the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
-
Exploring Spiritual Guidance: The Spirit of Christ (five weeks) – an overview of different ways of giving and receiving spiritual guidance.
Click here to view a sample of the Companions in Christ materials. If you are interested, please sign up in the narthex or call Tricia at the church. The class size is limited to 10 people.

Nigel Mumford
Some of you may recall that several years ago, Christine and I arranged for our old friend, Nigel Mumford, to be a speaker at Adult Sunday School followed by an incredibly inspirational sermon on the healing nature of God through prayer. We are thrilled to tell you that Nigel was ordained into the transitional deaconate in Albany (NY) last month and is scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Albany this upcoming December. Nigel has come to this place in his life through a circuitous route…a fighting Royal Marine Commando who felt touched by God in the midst of a combat area, inspired by witnessing the incredible healing of his own sister and his own fight to attempt to deny his healing talents. Nigel is a wonderful person, a terrific and supportive friend and a true gift from God. Join Christine and me in celebrating Nigel's ordination. ~ Rick Beard
Daniel Gade
Daniel Gade has been on the prayer list for the last six months. He was seriously injured in Iraq serving our country. We received a letter of thanks from him that is posted on the coffee hour bulletin board. Here is the latest update. ~The Woodards

Dear Family and Friends,
… Last weekend, I water-skied with my wife, fished on the ocean, walked around on a yacht and at a party with one cane only, and had a wonderful time. On the six-month anniversary of my injury, your prayers have brought me back from the brink of death to nearly normal function and a happy life again. Prayers matter, they work, and they are powerful. To God be the Glory. Great things he has done!
Love to all,
Daniel
