The Cycle of Giving
Throughout St. Dunstan’s ever-evolving, 40-year history, at least one great, if basic tradition has remained steadfast: that in our giving, we receive. Here in this small but strongly spiritual place, we have continued to share our time, our talents and our treasures – with one another and with God. We do so for the profound and deep rewards of spiritual connection through personal community; as our relationship to God is nourished here, so is our openness to know and do God’s work.
Through the years, from our family of founders to our latest new members, St. Dunstan’s parishioners have given generously of themselves in the sure knowledge that God’s work is being done here, in our own community, and therefore in the community beyond. The sense of fulfillment and grace we receive here, through our giving, is continuous, profound, immeasurable.
We are blessed as a parish to have had so many of our prayers and expressed desires answered. Our priest, our director of Christian formation for our children and youth, and now our inspiring new organist/choir director offer us the very best professional leadership and talent imaginable for our congregation and its diverse ministries. The major goals we wanted to achieve, as expressed in the parish profile survey of three years ago, are now a reality: sensitive pastoral care, great sermons, increased focus on children and youth, outstanding music, continued commitment to outreach. And these sensitively, intelligently fulfilled aspects of our Christian life at St. Dunstan’s have in turn attracted more than 40 new people to the church – another desired and exciting result of the last twelve months.
To our many new parishioners, we say thank you for joining in the tradition of giving from the moment you arrived. You have taught classes, served on committees, worked on the grounds, provided financial support and added so much to our lives together in worship, fellowship, and service. We thank you for what you bring to this place, for in a very deep and meaningful way, you have strengthened and energized us. You represent the constant renewal of St. Dunstan’s life cycle of giving and receiving. This is a time of celebration and, in turn, of challenge. To deliver the comprehensive and inspiring program we now have in place is, frankly, a stretch for a small parish like ours. But it is a key aspect of our tradition here to take risks for the work God has called us to do. We need everyone’s support.
You will soon be receiving information about the 2006 budget and stewardship campaign. In the meantime, if you have not yet made a 2005 pledge, or commitment to give, we invite you to do so. With a simple call to Tricia or to one of us, you can find out how to enter the cycle of giving, for it is in that cycle that we live the dreams of our parish and, in turn, carry out the work God has given us to do.

Speaking Out for Outreach
St. Dunstan's Joins Interfaith Partnership to Build
Those crisp cool fall days are finally here. And with them comes your opportunity for engaging, hands-on outreach with an immediate impact in the Atlanta community.
Beginning October 23 and continuing on Sundays until December 11 (excluding Thanksgiving weekend), volunteers from St. Dunstan's will be working side by side with partners from other faith communities in Atlanta—including Muslims, Jews and other Christian denominations—to build a new Habitat home for a needy Atlanta family. Originating after the 9/11 tragedy, the annual "Habitat Interfaith Build" has become a St. Dunstan's tradition. Now is your opportunity to pitch in and help in a tangible, meaningful way while you meet new friends.
As part of its commitment to this year's build, St. Dunstan's and the other faith partners have each agreed to:
-
provide financial assistance of $5000 to help finance the building materials for our house (already included in budgeted Outreach activities)
-
to help staff a work crew from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each Sunday of the build, and
-
That's where you come in. We're looking for a few good people -- 5 per week, to be exact -- to join the work crew. If you're someone whose talents run more toward making sandwiches and driving them to the work site than driving nails, we need you too, to join the group preparing lunch for 55 hungry workers on the 30th. It's hard work, sure, but as anyone who's worked on a Habitat house before will tell you, there's nothing like it!
Please click here to sign up online, look for sign-up sheets and more details on the Outreach bulletin board in the hallway outside the parish hall, or speak with Steve Hauser to find out more.

 BARBEQUE APPRECIATION
I wish there were some way to recognize every single person who pitched in to make this year’s barbeque such a wonderful occasion. There isn’t enough space in the bulletin, but I especially want to thank those who so kindly helped carry tables and chairs before and after, those who decorated so attractively, and those who gave so generously of their time setting up and cleaning up. My special thanks and big hugs go to Geoff, Danny, and Michael for their very long hours tending the fire that made our barbeque, Brunswick stew, and chicken so outstanding! Finally, thank you so much, Deborah Reece, for gifting St. D’s with the wonderful stained glass flying pigs!

Christian Formation for Youth and Children
Hiking, an Intergenerational Activity
Why join us for Spirituality & Wilderness Excursions for families and youth? Because together we will be:
- Listening for God in nature
- Developing environmental awareness
- Becoming trailblazers in culture by challenging ourselves in outdoor adventuring together
- Developing patience and calm in age of anxiety
- Re-awakening our senses
- Connecting or re-connecting to God, ourselves and each other through immersion in God’s creation
- Asking ourselves, after returning time and time again into the natural landscape, after being broken open by the beauty and power of God’s creation, “How will standing in the presence of this awesome God help me make a shift in my day to day rhythm, or otherwise inform how I proceed from here…”
Children do not want to be with adults who “have arrived”; they want to be with adults who have maintained a child-like curiosity for the world and are still energized by learning and growing. To be agents of change, we need to be open to personal transformation. Let’s become trailblazers together.
Upcoming excursions:
- Saturday, October 1st: Youth rafting trip
- Sunday, October 9th, 12 pm: Family Hike (all ages welcome) Amicalola Falls

Laudate Nomen Domini, vos servi Domini!

THANK YOU for your interest in Music at St. Dunstan’s. The Music Program of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church exists primarily to:
-
EDIFY the liturgies of our regular worship;
-
ENJOIN and EDUCATE the congregation; and
-
ENHANCE the cultural life of the community through
music’s unique language of EVANGELISM.
Throughout most of its 400-year history, the Anglican Communion has promoted a tradition of rich and glorious worship as primary in life. If worship is to be authentic and valid, then it must be able to lift hearts to the knowledge and love of God and to the glories of God’s kingdom. It is then that we as Christians are empowered to offer a transforming ministry to a needy world.
The Anglican Communion has always considered music a vital component of worship. In one of his many sermons on music, Basil the Great, Bishop of
Cæsarea (c.330-379), declared that “God mingles the sweetness of harmony with the divine Truth.” Certainly, this wonderful mingling continues to be felt week after week at St. Dunstan’s, where all regularly lift their varied talents in praise of the Glory of God. The Music Program not only belongs to, but also consists of, the entire congregation of St. Dunstan’s, whether they be active singers and instrumentalists, or quiet listeners who are silently uplifted.
Central to the Music Program at St. Dunstan’s is the St. Dunstan Choir, an all-auditioned adult ensemble which provides support and leadership to the congregation in the singing of hymns and service music. Consisting of sixteen thoroughly dedicated parish volunteers, the Choir also provides the carefully prepared anthems and motets which grace our Sunday services. In addition to regular Sunday morning worship, this season the Choir will expand its function of outreach through special Services of Music. Indeed, as we seek to more fully live and honor our Parish Mission Statement by being a “witness to the world through serving others”, the Choir will continue to expand its ministry through exploration of the fine choral heritage of our Anglican tradition. Additional Services of Music this season will include Choral Evensong, the candlelight Advent Procession with Carols, a Candlemas Procession with Evensong, and the beautiful Lenten Meditation with Carols.
St. Dunstan’s is indeed blessed with thriving ministries and an enthusiastic congregation, a congregation which regularly finds solace and inspiration in the worship of this parish. All are welcome to participate in the worship, educational offerings, music, and fellowship of St. Dunstan’s: I encourage you to extend this invitation by sharing the Series of Sacred Music Events with family and friends, so that together we might glorify Christ, be lifted up in the Spirit, and go forth in witness to God’s Word, joyfully following the instructions of the Psalmist:
Praise the Lord, ye servants, O Praise the Name of the Lord!
Blessed be the Name of the Lord from this time forth for evermore!
Please feel free to contact me at any time!
