June 2006 Contents
Pentecost, that day on which the Holy Spirit whooshed through the room where Jesus’ followers were praying, rattling the windows and empowering the once timid disciples to boldly proclaim the Gospel, has long been considered the birthday of the Church. It is also a day when we recognize the Spirit’s continuing presence among us, bringing us new life and new possibilities. On Pentecost Sunday this year, the Spirit brings new life to St. Dunstan’s with the arrival of our new Christian education director, Ellen Gallow. Ellen comes to us from Church of the Epiphany in Decatur , where she has been an active member and Sunday School teacher. She has degrees from Brown University and Galludet College and a Master of Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School . Ellen has worked as a college chaplain at Georgia Tech, Georgia State and St. Lawrence University in New York . She also has served as a chaplain at a psychiatric hospital in Ontario , and as a teacher for hearing impaired students in Connecticut and Massachusetts . Ellen is married to Jonathan Herman, who is on the faculty in the religious studies department at Georgia State . They have two daughters, Molly, 9, and Carly, 4. We will commission Ellen for her new ministry this Sunday at the 10 a.m. service. Please be there to welcome her and her family to St. Dunstan’s.

Smyrna Library displays Lamkin collectionThe Smyrna Library is displaying Jane Lamkin's collection, “Dolls from Around the World." Many of these 32 dolls (including 4 male dolls and artifacts from some of the countries) were collected by Jane and the late Bill Lamkin as they traveled with The Friendship Force. Some were gifts from international guests who visited Jane and Bill in their home. The display will be at the Smyrna Library through the end of June. We Have the Building Permit!!BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!! Many, many thanks to Wayne Lord for his tireless efforts over months and months of dealing with the Soviet Republic of the City of Atlanta. St. Dunstan's finally has a Building Permit for the new kitchen. Rector's Discretionary FundThe non-designated plate offering on the first Sunday of each month goes to the Rector's discretionary fund. This fund allows the rector to help people as she determines a need. Table of Contents | Return to top Mary & Martha's Place

| Hymn 516 “Come down, O love divine” | Down Ampney |
A hymn is, by proper definition, a poetic text set to music. The music of a hymn is called the “hymntune.” Composers of hymntunes provide their music with titles separate from the text of the hymn, thus giving the tune an identity of its own. These often fanciful titles may reflect a wide variety of meanings. In the above example, for instance, “Down Ampney” refers to the composer’s birthplace in Wales.
Take time each week to notice the history behind our church’s music, especially the brief background information at the foot of each hymn in The Hymnal 1982. You might be surprised at the vast tradition behind your singing!
